John (Jay) Walter Binkley, age 81, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
Jay was born in Pleasant View, Tennessee, on October 18, 1943, to Willie Belle Hooper and J.W. Binkley.
A proud Vietnam Veteran, Jay served five years in the U.S. Navy. Following his honorable discharge, he settled in Southern California, where he embarked on numerous business ventures, ranging from owning bars and restaurants to running electrical companies. He also developed a passion for collecting classic cars, showcasing his appreciation for timeless craftsmanship.
Eventually, Jay returned to his roots, settling back in Middle Tennessee, where he built a life surrounded by family and friends. A loving father, Jay instilled in his children the values that guided his own life: to never give up, never fear failure, and always prioritize integrity and a good name above all else.
A man of deep compassion, Jay was trusted by many and loved fiercely. Children and dogs were always drawn to his kind spirit, and his tender heart left a lasting impact on all who knew him. He was also a crafty card player, known for his quick wit and competitive nature, making game nights an unforgettable experience.
A skilled electrician for most of his life, Jay was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). He had a passion for University of Tennessee football and baseball, fishing with his friends, and cooking for his loved ones.
Jay is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Brandi and Matthew Courtwright, and Singne and Preston Slayton; his stepson Tony Bess and family; his grandchildren Tristin Courtwright, Kylee Courtwright, Jessica Lashley, Zachary Delphia, Kegan Slayton, and Cole Slayton; his sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and R.B. Hester; and his nephew Darren Perry.
A private celebration of Jay's life will be held in the spring of 2025. Family and close friends will be notified with the details.
